Why England? Why not China, India, or Japan?
In the first seminary we talked about the different reasons which made possible the industrialisation of England before other countries.
First of all , we have to say that the industrial revolution was not like a sudden break, but a deeply change that occurred over several generations.
How come India did not get industrialized?
One of the reasons is that India has always had cast stratification and this leads to such important inequalities concerning rights and acquisitive power between the higher casts and the lower ones. It has to be mentioned that India did not have bourgeoisie and for all that, many believe that this could have a slight relation with the non-development of the industrialization.
On the other hand, it has to be pointed out that in those times; India had the necessary resources and population to carry out the process of industrialization. However, it turned out that nobody had the need to consume industrial products so that the society was still quite primary and would only buy food.
What about Japan?
In one hand, Japan, like India, had a pyramidal social stratification. In the top of it, we find the warrior class –Shogun- and they were not interested on improving the Japanese economy and of course, this could logically lead to the non-industrialization.
It has to be pointed out that main obstacle for the development of the economy was Japan’s small territory, because it was only formed by its islands and lacks of colonies. As a result, it never had an important commercial net or resources.
It took some years until Japan solved the population inefficiency and improved its industrialization.
And China?
China had many resources, a lot of territory and population and was considered to be the first country to become industrialized. However, the analphabetic index was very high and it became impossible to develop a premature industrial revolution. In addition, the civil service body lasts for a long time due to the big extension of territory and the giant amount of population is dedicated to subsistence farming.
How come England became the first potence who could make possible the industrial revolution?
There are many factors which interact in scene which made possible this process:
-In the first term we have the institucional framework, in part, was the rol of the State as the definer of the rules of play, which led the several inovations in the industrial technology.
-The protestant religion, which became an essential fact, because it improved literacy index.
-The great levels and quality of the British coal, which made possible cheap and efficient energy.
-The specific social stratification
-The colonial net the country possessed.
-The low interest rates stemming from the increasing accumulation of capital.
